This vacancy and the majority of the team members are based in Amsterdam. Daily work involves cross-team and cross-country collaborations. We are part of the ING’s Wholesale Banking Tech Transaction Services organization.

The team

We are responsible for the design, modification and maintenance of the software solutions used to process receivables finance deals, supply chain finance deals, bank guarantees, trade loans, letters of credit and documentary collections. The team is currently focusing on accelerating the digitalization of the global customer journeys for Bank Guarantees, covering the development front-to-back and enabling straight-through processing via channels, backend services and other applications from our IT landscape.

You will lead a chapter of software engineers and DevOps engineers as well as work as senior engineer in a squad. The chapter uses and shall master the latest ING tech stack:

  • Distributed systems running cloud-natively.
  • Back-end development using Spring Framework and Kotlin.
  • Front-end development in JavaScript and Lit-Element (web components).
  • CI/CD & Backlog Management using Azure DevOps.
  • Infrastructure on OpenShift.
  • Monitoring & alerting using Grafana/Prometheus & ELK.
  • Test automation with Junit, Karate/Cucumber, Gherkin and Gatling.

Roles and responsibilities

As IT Chapter Lead and Dev Engineer, you are a key player in the cooperation between engineers, product owners, customer journey experts and other stakeholders. Your main responsibilities in this position will involve:

  • Lead and manage a team of engineers, providing mentorship, guidance, and technical expertise as needed.
  • Design, implement, and maintain robust IT solutions with a primary emphasis on reliability and security.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans, ensuring that engineering projects are delivered on time and with minimal to no technical debt.
  • Review and evaluate technical designs, providing feedback and guidance to ensure that designs meet product requirements and industry standards.
  • Participate in code reviews and technical discussions to maintain high-quality code and ensure that code aligns with product goals and industry standards.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate team performance, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Implement and safeguard all mandatory standards to ensure IT Risk is within the risk appetite of the bank.
  • Ensure that engineering processes and practices are aligned with industry best practices and that the team is following established procedures and protocols.
  • Actively participate in training plans and help all engineers in the area to level their technical skills together with the rest of the engineering managers.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement within the engineering team.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or in another engineering domain combined with strong IT background.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of software engineering, with at least 4 years of experience in a Tech leadership role.
  • Strong technical background and expertise in software development methodologies, programming languages, and cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Experience with adopting software architecture design best practices, with hands-on experience with the design of secure distributed systems.
  • Senior Java engineer skills, preferably complemented by experience with Kotlin and front-end development (ideally on JavaScript and Lit-Element).
  • Deep understanding of Spring framework especially the following modules: Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security and Spring Data+JPA.
  • Sound knowledge of technologies to support the reliability of distributed architectures, such as Docker and deployment pipelines (ideally Azure DevOps). Experience with Kubernetes, Prometheus, and the ELK stack are a good additional.
  • Hands on experience with Oracle data bases, preferably involving DB as a service.
  • Good knowledge of integration patterns and middleware technologies for message and event-based communication, such as Apache Kafka and ActiveMQ.
  • Strong skills on software verification & validation techniques, including experience writing BDD tests (ideally using Gherkin) and performance tests (ideally using Gatling).
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team of software engineers and DevOps engineers.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and project management.
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality software products on time.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, being able to elaborate, write and present ideas clearly at different levels of abstraction.
  • Ability and willingness to communicate with stakeholders directly to gather requirements, resolve incidents, and conduct UAT.
  • Ability to challenge, influence and convince others through fact-based arguments.
