We are looking for an Intern for our Center of Excellence Sustainability Expertise within our Global Sustainability department. The CoE Sustainability Expertise delivers core expertise to our entire organisation on Climate, Nature and Human Rights (the core themes of our Global Sustainability Direction). We’re looking for an intern who can help deliver on our climate- and nature themes.

Our Purpose

There is no denying that one of the biggest challenges for society is sustainability, in all its forms. Climate change threatens both the planet and its people. People may struggle with inequality or a lack of basic human rights. As the challenges increase, there’s a growing sense of urgency that governments and businesses should step in and help tackle them. The world is changing, and banking needs to change with it. ING aims to put sustainability at the heart of what we do, defining new ways of doing business where planet and people are just as important as economic growth. It’s about making progress together, step by step. It starts with our own operations and people. Looking inward, means striving to ensure our operations – our buildings, data centres and how we use transport – are in line with the low-carbon economy of the future. That our employees are treated well and that neither we nor our suppliers infringe on human rights. But we can do more. As a global bank with billions flowing through our books, we have an opportunity to make an impact for the better. Doing so by bringing aspects of climate, nature and protecting human rights into our dialogue with clients and financing decisions. ING wants to be a pioneer in defining new ways to do business. We want to be a banking leader in building a sustainable future for our company, our customers, society and the environment.

The Global Sustainability Department

Our Global Sustainability Department, reports directly to the CEO, and oversees the Sustainability Direction of ING Group globally, including strategies to improve Sustainability for our customers, our community, and our colleagues. Our team of sustainability consultants integrate sustainability within our banking operations worldwide, across both Retail and Wholesale Banking markets, and covers advice and programme management

across the full range of ESG objectives. ING has been recognised as one of the most sustainable banks in the world for our contributions to progressing action on key global challenges such as climate change and the impacts of technology on society.

We’re committed to setting the standard for ING’s sustainability performance, and raising the bar for our peers, the sectors we’re active in and other stakeholders. We collaborate with all ING business lines, domains and countries. We encourage and help educate our colleagues and actively engage with external stakeholders to create a ripple effect on sustainability impact.

Delivering on our purpose means we work with our colleagues to integrate and embed current and upcoming relevant sustainability themes in ING’s businesses, as we strive to put sustainability at the heart of what we do and empower people to stay a step ahead in life and in business.

We do this by staying a step ahead ourselves – combining deep knowledge and expertise on Climate, Nature and Human Rights with an up-to-date outside-in view. We translate the interests of stakeholders into a sustainability strategy focused on maximising ING’s impact. We are both proactive and flexibly reactive, and our advice and actions support the sustainable transformation of ING, and by extension the transitions of our customers.

Our aspiration is to bring all parts of ING together to truly make the difference and be a banking leader in sustainability.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Support the (Sr) Consultants and Theme Leads in the development and implementation of methodologies and approaches for INGs climate and/or nature strategy.

How to succeed

We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.
