Senior Platform Engineer - Global Observability Platform

Global Monitoring Area

Our department is at the IT heart of ING. Our purpose is to build a truly Global Observability Platform that enables ING services to run seamlessly and puts engineers in control of their observability. We are a diverse team working from all over the world with a passion for engineering and great attention to non-functional requirements. We trust our engineers, and we guide them in making an impact and in their professional growth. Although we are a big team (80+ people), we stay lean and improve on a daily basis.

Our Platform – One Observability Platform (OOP)

At ING the landscape has become increasingly complex with more applications added every day. We depend and rely on each other to deliver a reliable service to our customers that demands the very best of us.

Every single day, our engineers typically look at metrics, traces and logs to assess the health of their application, all of which need to be pulled from different sources and interfaces. OOP (was MDPL) provides a solution where they can combine data with just a few clicks but being connected and dependent on a large chain of applications raises the need for insights beyond their application to run a reliable service.

Platform Engineering

Platform Engineering is responsible for monitoring and observability data services, such as providing components for onboarding, data storage, dashboarding, alerting and offering observability insights to all ING engineers globally. You will support the observability core team in running the core capabilities and increasing observability maturity across ING.

The team

Foundation squad is an international team of highly qualified DevOps engineers. You will join a team where the product is constantly evolving and introducing new features. The platform is based on several backends components, deployed on ING’s private cloud (RedHat OpenShift) as well as the public cloud (MS Azure (AKS)).

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Platform Engineer to join our team in a DevOps environment. The successful candidate will have a strong background in Observability and a deep understanding of Open Telemetry, and experience working in a complex, enterprise-level environment.

You will have a leading role in the squad regarding designing, implementing, and testing new and improved functionality of the products. You understand the entire lifecycle of an application from refinement up until release to production, as well as the operational aspects like monitoring, alerting, and resolving incidents.

Roles and responsibilities

We have an opening for an energetic and proactive Senior Platform Engineer with a true passion for IT and a positive “Do it-Try it-Fix it” mentality.

Together with your fellow squad-members, you are responsible for the future of ING’s observability solution:

  • Drive improvements in our current Observability solution
  • Enable ING teams globally to have a frictionless experience in storing and exposing the Telemetry data for their applications.
  • Incorporate AI features to our Observability solution
  • Extend the solution to run On-premises as well as Public Cloud.
  • Use the latest technologies to improve the usability of our solution.

How to succeed

You have a good understanding of IT and building platforms. You are a natural team player who forms relationships based on social skills rather than a hierarchical structure. You can easily switch contexts from engineers, architects, to stakeholders, to management.

We understand you may not tick every box, but do not let that hold you back from applying!

  • 15+ years solid experience in Software/Systems Engineering
  • Strong knowledge of and extensive experience with software development principles and design patterns
  • Formidable team player skills, empowering and challenging the squad members in a constructive way.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Azure DevOps pipelines.
  • Experience with OpenShift/Kubernetes
  • Experience with Linux
  • Experience with Terraform
  • Experience with AI (LLM, Prompting, Coding)
  • Experience with OpenTelemetry (Logging, Metrics and Tracing)
  • 10+ years solid experience with Go / Java or Python
  • Experience with Public Cloud providers (Azure, GCP) and solutions working on the cloud is an advantage.
  • Higher education in (Information) Technology or work experience that demonstrates you operate on this level.
  • Excellent command of the English language. Dutch language skills are an advantage but not a must-have.

Our technology stack and practices include among others (but not limited to):

  • Monitoring and Observability tools as Grafana LGTM, Prometheus, Open Telemetry, Splunk.
  • A diverse set of programming languages: Java, Python and Golang.
  • Practices such as SRE, Chaos engineering.
